About

Don't Worry About It, The Boys Got Me is a line spoken in a viral TikTok clip in which a boy is seen making a basketball lay-up while being recorded. When asked how it's supposed to go viral, because all he did was make a simply lay-up on a standard hoop, his response back of 'don't worry about it, the boys got me' proved to eventually be correct, as it would go viral over the following four years.

Origin

On July 2nd, 2020, the TikToker Swaggy_Lemos[1] uploaded a TikTok of him making a standard lay-up on a basketball hoop on the street in a residential neighborhood. In the TikTok, after the camerawoman asks how he's supposed to go viral for that, he replies that the boys got him, echoing a sentiment similar to Reddit Army and Not Your Personal Army, believing that the boys online will share the clip and make it go viral regardless of the actual skill involved in the trick. This worked, as the TikTok received over 860,000 likes in four years (shown below).

Spread

Over the years, the audio would start to be used for Basketball content creators to do their own spin on a lay-up. This was shown in the May 16th, 2022 TikTok uploaded by the content creator TheProfessor[2], who used the audio as a backing sound while he showed off several different streetball skills before going for a lay-up, earning over 667,000 likes in two years (shown below).

Following this, the audio started to branch into other platforms, with other creators using the audio for their own lay-ups. On May 29th, 2022, the YouTuber GunnarBennett0[3] uploaded his own lay-up, in which he used the backboard of one basketball hoop to bounce the ball into a separate basketball hoop, earning over 617,000 views in two years and introducing the audio to a different platform (shown below).
