About
Draw Your OC in This (also Draw Your OC in This Style and other versions) is a fan art trend that involves drawing images of one's original or favorite characters in a certain outfit, often revealing or humorous, in a certain style or striking a certain pose. A descendant of Draw Your OTP Tumblr challenges, the trend saw continuous virality with artists online since 2016.
Origin
Draw Your OC in This is a development of the drawing challenge Draw Your OTP, first recorded use of which on Tumblr[1] was made by user court-the-qunari on April 27th, 2015 (shown below). The post, captioned "New OTP Challenge," gained over 34,000 likes and reblogs in 10 months.
Throughout 2015 and 2016, the Draw Your OTP challenge developed into Draw Your Squad challenges and Draw Your OC in This challenges, participants of which were tasked with drawing their OC (original character) in a certain outfit, pose or style. For example, on December 5th, 2015, Tumblr[2] user croxovergoddess submitted a prompt that received over 65,500 likes and reblogs in six years (shown below, left). On February 16th, 2016, Tumblr[3] user ask-high-school-alice posted a photograph of two outfits, writing, "draw your otp in these." The post gained 530 likes and reblogs in six years.
Spread
Starting in 2017, and especially after the November 2018 Tumblr Adult Content Ban and the massive migration of the online art community to Twitter, the Draw Your OC in This prompts have appeared on Twitter where they've gone viral. For example, on November 25th, 2018, Twitter[4] user @thepancakehub posted a prompt that received over 1,300 retweets and 4,700 likes in four years. On November 26th, Twitter[5] user @Blushily posted a prompt that gained over 1,200 retweets and 4,400 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
The challenge maintained its prevalence on Tumblr and Twitter in the following years. For example, on January 25th, 2019, Twitter[6] user @EvinandValia posted a prompt that received over 3,600 retweets and 14,800 likes in three years (shown below, left). On April 25th, 2022, Twitter[7] user @MinnowCandy submitted a challenge that gained over 4,700 retweets and 52,800 likes in roughly two weeks (shown below, center; humorous challenge submission shown below, right).
In early May 2022, the trend saw an influx of humorous prompts following a tweet[8] by user @UltimaShadowX in which they wrote that those suggesting extremely revealing outfits for Draw Your OC in This prompts should drop the charade and just ask to draw them naked (tweet and examples shown below).
