About

Enrico Dandolo was the 41st Doge of Venice and one of the most controversial and influential Doges in Venetian history (note: Doge was the title of the publically-elected chief-magistrate of Venice^[1] and is not to be confused with the internet meme Doge). He is often featured online in memes about the Fourth Crusade and the Sack of Constantinople, as well as photoshops that associate him with Doge the dog.

Origin

Some of the earliest memes about Dandolo can be traced to him being a selectable leader^[2] in the turn-based strategy video game Civilization V: Brave New World. Due to his title being homonym with the popular dog in meme culture, he was often portrayed as Doge in photoshops. Known as Dogeolo^[3], Dandolo memes started spreading online. On October 3rd, 2013, a Doge photoshop was shared on r/SuperShibe^[4] by Reddit user sidscarf, titled "doge enrico dandolo of venice" (shown below, left). On December 8th, 2014, Steam user DefinitelyNotRuss shared on Steam Community his own Doge edit, titled "Doge Enrico Dandolo"^[5] which received over 80 likes in 6 years (shown below, right).

Dandolo memes saw growing popularity on the 4chan board /his/, with anonymous users making him the face and figure against Byzantine (byzaboos^[6]) and Greek posters. The nickname "Daddy Dandolo" was used for the first time^[7] by an anonymous /his/ user on January 4th, 2018 as a reply to a Hitler Did Nothing Wrong type of post, featuring an image of Dandolo himself. Another user called him "medieval bomber harris" (shown below).

The day after, on January 5th, 2018, an anonymous user on /his/ mentioned for the first time "FALLO ANCORA, DADDY DANDOLO"^[8], as a reference to "Do It Again, Bomber Harris"^[9].

Dandolo memes spread throughout the board, particularly some edits that had his face looming over the city of Constantinople, with later edits showing him destroying it with a laser from his eyes (shown below).
