About
History & Humanities, abbreviated as /his/, is a 4chan board dedicated to history and the other humanities subjects such as philosophy, religion, law, classical artwork, archeology, anthropology, ancient languages, and similar topics.
History
The board was created on January 11th, 2015 as a place for discussions regarding history. Its pinned post by a moderator states "/his/ is not /pol/, and Global Rule #3 is in effect. Do not try to treat this board as /pol/ with dates. Blatant racism and trolling will not be tolerated, and a high level of discourse is expected. History can be examined from many different conflicting viewpoints; please treat other posters with respect and address the content of their post instead of attacking their character.".[1] This rule, often ignored by posters who joined from /pol/, created hostility between the two boards, which made it one of /his/'s signature aspects (example post shown below).
Board Culture
The reputation the board built around itself is centered around the creation of bizarre fan arts, fanfics and copypastas involving various historical factions and figures, particularly Charles II of Spain, Oskar Dirlewanger, Anne Frank, Sir Arthur Harris, Herodotus and Voltaire, as they are often used as the board's mascots (shown below).
/his/ is also known for the creation and popularization of different original characters (examples shown below).
Related Memes
Preggo Anne Frank
As one of the board's signature mascots, Anne Frank became popular on /his/ after fan arts of her being pregnant were being drawn by the users. The concept was started by a post in /pol/ imagining an afternoon of lovemaking with a pregnant Anne Frank was posted for the first time on /pol/[2] April 18th, 2016. Months later, it appeared on /his/[3] where it gained its current popularity.
Disdain For Plebs
As an example of elitism on the board, plebeians (originally referring to other boards' posters) are often blamed for several historical catastrophes, as the patrician elite is praised. The face of the meme became a bust of the Roman Emperor Caracalla in reference to the Massacre of Alexandria.[4]
Charlesposting
Memes regarding Charles II of Spain became widespread as an argument against monarchists, incest[5] and "pure-blooded" elites in history that practiced it (example shown below).
Voltaireposting
Voltaire and his statement about the Holy Roman Empire being neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire[6] became a widespread meme on /his/ against the Germanic conglomerate. The statement is often abbreviated by a triple greentext arrow for "Holy", "Roman" and "Empire" (shown below, right). Voltaire and the HRE banner with a greentext arrow in the middle became the face and the logo of the board itself (shown below, left).
Goebbels' Chin
Photoshopped edits of Nazi Germany's Minister of Propaganda "Joseph Goebbels' chin have periodically appeared on the board, usually followed by a mockery of the German ideal of a Master Race[7] (Herrenvolk).
Dirlewangerposting
Oskar Dirlewanger was a Wehrmacht officer and leader of a unit infamous for its war crimes. Dirlewanger edits are usually accompanied by pop culture references and memes to make him look silly or funny. He is usually the avatar of /pol/acks on the board.
Bomber Harris
Sir Arthur Harris was the Royal Air Force (RAF) Commander In Chief during World War 2. On /his/ he is usually mentioned and praised for the Bombing of Dresden and his quotes are often used as anti-/pol/ and anti-German memes.
Fallo Ancora Daddy Dandolo
Enrico Dandolo and the Sack of Constantinople are usually referenced in memes against Byzantine posters or Greek posters. The line is a half translation in Italian that references "Do It Again Bomber Harris".[8]
Dovahhatty
Dovahhatty, also known as "Dovah" is a Brazilian YouTuber who gained popularity thanks to his Unbiased History series. Dovahhatty mentioned multiple times being a regular poster on /his/[9] and referenced the board and its memes in his videos (example shown below).
Scots Wikipedia Articles Vandalism
Scots Wikipedia Articles Vandalism refers to a controversy surrounding thousands of articles found on Scots Wikipedia that are, instead of Scots, written in mangled English. On August 25th 2020, a thread was made on the 4chan /his/ board that started a discussion about dozens of articles on Scots Wikipedia that weren't even written in Scots.
Historical Wojaks
Also known as /his/torical Wojaks, are detailed memes drawn by an anonymous user on /his/ that potray different historical figures and events using classic 4chan memes, but primarily the Wojak.
