The 2018 Thousand Oaks Shooting refers to a mass shooting that took place in early November 2018 at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California. A total of 13 people including the suspect were killed in the shooting, along with an additional 25 injured.

Background

On the evening of November 7th, 2018, a shooting occurred at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, during which smoke bombs were thrown while the shooter fired with a .45 caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun equipped with an extended magazine. Of the 12 people killed by the suspect, 11 were college students and one was Sgt. Ron Helus.

The Suspect

The perpetrator was identified as Ian David Long, a 28-year-old veteran of the Marine Corps. Prior to the shooting, he had a previous interaction with authorities who investigated him for a disturbance near his home.

On November 8th, 2018, the KCAL 9 CBS local news station released an interview with former Newbury Park High School track coach Dominique Colell, who claimed Long had sexually assaulted her when she was his track coach (shown below).

“Ian came up and started screaming at me that was his phone. He just started grabbing me. He groped my stomach. He groped my butt. I pushed him off me and said after that -- ‘you’re off the team.’”

That day, a Twitter Moments[8] page was created titled "High school coach alleges Thousand Oaks suspected shooter assaulted her," highlighting various reactions to the assault allegation.
