Overview

Cristiano Ronaldo Goal Celebration refers to a moment during Portugal vs. Uruguay match in the 2022 Qatar World Cup in which Ronaldo celebrated a goal he did not score. The event went viral on social media with several profiles criticizing the player's posture for having celebrated a goal he knew he had not scored.

Origin

On November 28nd, 2022, Portugal beat Uruguay by 2-0[1] and qualified the team for the knock-out phase of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The winning goals were scored by Bruno Fernandes. One of them, however, was only confirmed to be scored by Fernandes after a delay in confirming the referees. The delay occurred because the midfielder made the cross in the area while Cristiano Ronaldo went up to celebrate after the ball entered the adversary team's goal (see below).

Spread

Shortly afterward Ronaldo's celebration, the goal was confirmed for Bruno Fernandes[2] because, according to the referee, Cristiano Ronaldo's head did not touch the ball. People watching the game went to Twitter to comment about the controversial goal, some defending the Portuguese team, like @NazareAmarga[3] did with this zoomed image showing that Ronaldo's hair may have slightly brushed against the ball. The post received 1,700 likes and 100 retweets in a day.

@Princey_IV[4] joked about Ronaldo's hair touching the ball with this edited image of the player's hair "for his next game." The image garnered 13,100 likes and 867 retweets in a day.
