Dogeday

Overview

Dogeday is an unofficial holiday celebrating Dogecoin cryptocurrency that took place on April 20th, 2021, which is also the 420 Day celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts. Proposed by a Redditor in /r/dogecoin subreddit and picked up by the Dogecoin community, the holiday has become a subject of hype-up memes, with users discussing possible moves in the price of Dogecoin.

Background

Initial Attempts

February 4th

On January 30th, 2021, during the Dogecoin surge prompted by posts in the /r/SatoshiStreetBets^[1] and /r/dogecoin^[2] subreddits, Redditor^[3] unknwnrand posted an image that urged /r/dogecoin subscribers to buy Dogecoin on February 4th between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. EST. The post received over 230 upvotes prior to being removed by the moderators (seen below).

On February 1st, 2021, Redditor^[4] flynerd3000 proposed to make February 4th a Doge Day. The post received over 6,700 upvotes in /r/dogecoin prior to being removed by the moderators. On February 4th, several memes about Dogeday were posted in /r/dogecoin.^[5][6]

April 1st

On March 29th, 2021, Twitter^[7] user @BadonkaDoge replied to Twitter user @ChurchOfPumps that they were making April 1st, April Fools' Day, into Dogeday (tweet shown below, right). Within 10 minutes, @ChurchOfPumps tweeted,^[8] "#April1st shall be known as #DogeDay," with the tweet gaining over 50 retweets and 170 likes in three weeks (shown below, right).

In late March 2021 and on April 1st, multiple posts about Dogeday were posted on Twitter,^[9] with separate examples also posted in the /r/dogecoin^[10] subreddit. For example, on March 30th, 2021, Twitter^[11] user @DogecoinRise posted a tweet that gained over 220 retweets and 550 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On April 1st, Billy Markus, co-founder of Dogecoin, made several tweets^[12][13] about Dogeday, with one of the tweets gaining over 360 retweets and 1,700 likes (shown below, center).

April 20th

Separately from attempts to establish Dogeday on February 4th and April 1st, between February 22nd and April 10th, Redditor^[14][15][16] doge2dmoon posted multiple comments in which they communicated an intention to hold their Dogecoins until April 20th, 2021 (2021 'Weed' Day). On April 10th, doge2dmoon, using their alternative Reddit^[17] account DoGeToDaMoOnWoW, posted a Dust Storm Dog captioned "Dogeday 4/20." The post (shown below) received nearly 290 upvotes in /r/dogecoin subreddit.

Starting on April 12th,^[18] DoGeToDaMoOnWoW posted the image to /r/dogecoin subreddit on daily basis, with the image gaining over 260 upvotes on April 13th,^[19] over 1,000 upvotes on April 14th^[20] and over 2,700 upvotes on April 15th.^[21] On April 15th, the image was reposted by several Twitter^[22][23] users. For example, a repost by Twitter user @PAVGOD received 100 retweets and nearly 1,000 likes.

During the week of April 12th, 2021, the price of Dogecoin increased drastically,^[24] with the cryptocurrency, worth .07 cents on Monday, peaking at .44 cents on Friday before pulling back to approximately .30 cents. The surge in the price of the coin brought more public attention to it, assisting the spread of the proposed holiday idea.

Developments

Following the initial posts, the April 20th Dogeday achieved viral status, with the proposed unofficial holiday overshadowing the popularity of the previous attempts. On April 19th, 2021, Gizmodo^[25] and USA Today^[26] posted news articles about the attempts to turn April 20th into Dogeday.
