Overview
"E My Sports" is a Season 30 episode of The Simpsons in which Bart becomes a serious esports competitor and Homer coaches him. The episode was notable for being one of the most high-profile references to esports in pop culture.
Background
On March 13th, 2019, Simpsons producer Al Jean[1] tweeted a screenshot of the week's upcoming Simpsons episode. The screenshot showed a game called "Conflict of Enemies," a fake game based off League of Legends (shown below).
Tweets from esports consultant Rod Breslau tweeted that Simpsons writers had consulted with Riot Games to make sure they presented an “accurate representation of video games in the episode.”[2] Consultants included esports co-heads Whalen Rozelle and Jarred Kennedy, and League Championship Series commentator David "Phreak" Turley.[3]
Developments
The episode aired March 17th, 2019.[4] The episode's handling of gaming culture was reviewed favorably by the AV Club,[5] who wrote that the show avoided pitfalls of sounding out of touch, but wrote more negatively about the episode's resolution, which they said felt rushed. CNBC[6] wrote the episode marked a significant development for esports in popular culture. Online, K-pop fans expressed excitement over a reference in the episode to BTS (examples shown below).
