Overview

First COVID-19/Coronavirus in Indonesia refers to news that confirmed first case of COVID-19/Coronavirus in Indonesia on March 2020, not long after self-proclaimed that Indonesian have more immunity against COVID-19 so they are making many memes about how strong their immune is.

Background

Since World Health Organization[1] (WHO) declared COVID-19 as Public Health Emergency of International Concern on January, 30th 2020, many experts has been confused about why Indonesian who lived in Indonesia still didn't get infected by COVID-19 until February.

After that, many Indonesians creating memes about their immunity against COVID-19. For example on February, 13th 2020, Facebook user Rio Vitoni[2] uploaded meme using Spongebob Squarepants Season 2 epidode 32 "The Bully" scenes as object labeling for depicting how strong Indonesian immune even when some Indonesians has been trapped in Diamond Princess cruise ship at Yokohama, Japan and no one of them was infected by COVID-19, according to Indonesian media outlet Detik[3] (shown below).

According to Aljazeera[4], researchers at Harvard University in the United States have suggested there could be "undetected cases" in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, and have recommended Jakarta strengthen its detection systems.

Meanwhile Indonesia's health minister Terawan Agus Putranto calling the Harvard study "insulting" and arguing Jakarta has not yet recorded a single case "all because of prayers".

Development

On March, 1st 2020, according to Indonesian media outlet CNBC[5] Indonesia, expert from Indonesia Hermawan Saputra explained the reason why Indonesian didn't get infected by COVID-19 while many countries around Indonesia has been infected such as Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, etc.

Hermawan thought it's about racial differences when countries around Indonesia has been infected, it makes Indonesian stronger against COVID-19.

"Nah, teori awalnya karena kita ini perbedaan ras, karena kita ini tergolong dalam rumpun ras Melayu, maka reseptornya dianggap berbeda," (English: the theory is about racial differences, we (Indonesian) included as a family of Malay, so the receptors are considered different) says Hermawan.

First COVID-19 case

Unfortunately on March, 2nd 2020, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo confirmed first case of Indonesian who get infected by COVID-19.

According to TheJakartaPost[6], President of Indonesia Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has announced that two Indonesians have tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the first two confirmed cases of the disease in the country.

Jokowi said that the two people, a 64-year-old and her 31-year-old daughter, had been in contact with a Japanese citizen who tested positive in Malaysia on February, 27th after visiting Indonesia in early February.

“When we received information [about the Japanese citizen] a team in Indonesia immediately traced who the Japanese citizen met with,” Jokowi told reporters at the State Palace on Monday. “We checked [the two people] and this morning I received a report from the health minister that they tested positive for the coronavirus.”

Still on the same day, Facebook user Teguh Aji Alfian uploaded video of 'Ojek' driver preparing by wearing anti-radiation mask before he's taking some costumers to Facebook group "BEKAKAS (Bergejil Suka Motor Bekas).
