Overview

Hatsune Miku at 2020 Tokyo Olympics refers to a social media campaign in support of Vocaloid software Hatsune Miku performing at 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Following Hatsune Miku's singing appearing in a promotional video for the Olympics, multiple memes and posts calling for Miku's performance to be included in the Olympics ceremony program were posted online. While spawning numerous memes, the movement was ultimately unsuccessful.

Background

On July 12th, 2019, entertainment website Siesta Tokyo posted an unofficial poll for artists which their readers would like to see perform at Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which has been misidentified by some as an official vote.[1] As if August 8th, 2019, Vocaloid software Hatsune Miku, personified as a 16-year-old girl with turquoise twintails, led the poll with over 24,400 votes (10 percent of total votes submitted).

On July 22nd, 2019, the official Twitter account for 2020 Summer Olympics posted a promotional video featuring the Tokyo Olympics mascot Miraitowa.[2] At 10 second mark, a short audio clip of Vocaloid software (vocal synthesizer) Hatsune Miku singing can be heard.

Online Reactions

Following the teaser, multiple posts speculating on Hatsune Miku potentially performing at the Tokyo Olympics opening or closing ceremony were posted online, particularly in anime communities (examples shown below).[3][4] In many examples, the unofficial vote launched by Siesta Tokyo was linked to and/or referred to as the official poll.
