Overview

Nipsey Hussle's Death refers to the shooting of grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle outside his clothing score in Los Angeles, California, on March 31st, 2019. Police have identified Eric Holder as the primary suspect in the shooting. The news led to an outpouring of tribute and support from Hussle's fans.

Background

Hussle was a grammy-nominated rapper for his debut full-length album Victory Lap.[1] On March 31st, 2019, he was shot multiple times outside his store, Marathon Clothing, in Los Angeles, and died at the age of 33.[2] Police later identified a man named Eric Holder as the primary suspect, that he was known to Holder, and that the killing was perhaps motivated by a personal dispute.[3]

The news led to widespread reactions through social media. Major celebrities tweeted their condolences and tributes to the late rapper, including LeBron James [4] (shown below, left) and Chance the Rapper [5] (shown below, right). Additionally, a conspiracy theory circulated that Hussle's death was related to his work on a documentary concerning a Dr. Sebi, an herbalist who in 1985 said he could cure any disease, including AIDS, with a plant-based diet.[8] Some conspiracy theorists believe his work was silenced by the American government. Hussle was among such people, leading to suspicion that his murder was orchestrated by the government to keep his findings from becoming public. YouTuber Gematria Effect News posted a video going into the conspiracy, gaining over 49,000 views (shown below). Nick Cannon appeared to indicate he would finish Hussle's documentary on Dr. Sebi.[9]

I'm going to be honest. I never knew of this guy until 2 days ago. But because I live in Los Angeles, and this is a huge story here in LA, I've come to learn a great deal about what this man has been trying to accomplish, and why he is so famous. And I truly understand and appreciate the outpouring of sadness that a huge number of people have for this man. This man has led a remarkable life, and what makes it so much more so tragic is that we see this happen to a genuinely good man. We all love stories of redemption. We all love seeing the dark turn to light. I cannot imagine what kind of light this man would have brought to the world after seeing the kind of darkness he did. I sincerely hope that many in the Crenshaw community, and greater South Central LA (the "hood") take this death as a source of inspiration and drive.
