Overview

The September 2024 NHentai Shutdown refers to a brief shutdown of the hentai site NHentai in early September 2024 due to a legal matter involving Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedowns. The incident sparked numerous memes and jokes on social media, as a few weeks earlier, a series of well-known anime and pirate streaming websites were permanently shut down. NHentai's sudden disappearance occurred after a lawsuit was filed by California company PCR Distributing, which operates several hentai brands, alleging that the site "doesn't respond to takedown notices."

Background

On September 4th, 2024, several NHentai users on social media reported the site was shut down due to legal action the hentai website was facing, as Torrent Freak^[1] revealed a day earlier on September 3rd, the California company PCR Distributing sued NHentai alleging that the website did not respond to takedown notices and that it "attempted to settle the dispute confidentially months ago, but that attempt failed."

X^[2] user @ndbiaw posted a Discord chat conversation on September 4th from one of the NHentai site admins titled "NHentai is down," in which they claimed the website was momentarily shut down due to the legal action they were facing, "which will cost them $4 million in compensation." The tweet (seen below) received roughly 350 likes and 70 reposts in a day.

A few hours after some NHentai users reported the site's shutdown, others posted that the site was restored and live again, as X^[3] user @Lost_Pause_ shared in a screenshot on September 4th, 2024 (seen below), writing, "I was worried when everyone said nHentai was shutdown. But it's back up for me. Crisis averted." The post amassed more than 1,000 likes and 40 reposts in one day.

Also on September 4th, 2024, X^[4] user @CunnyStruggle posted the George Bush Learning About 9/11 meme, captioning it, "Sir, Nhentai has been shut down," which amassed over 35,000 likes and 2,400 reposts in a day.

YouTuber and streamer @cawcawTV^[5] posted a video on September 5th commenting on NHentai's shutdown (seen below), amassing roughly 1,200 views and 100 likes in a few hours.

Also on September 5th, 2024, Redditor^[6] jussumgai2 posted a "Batman No. No, Stay With Me!" meme, captioning it, "Me to all my marine porn once nhentai gets shut down." The post (seen below) received roughly 750 likes and 40 comments in a few hours.
