About
Batman's "No. No, Stay With Me!" is an exploitable meme format based on two or three panels from the Superman/Batman #56 DC Comics series in which Batman sees illusions of his long-dead parents, briefly believing that they are alive, and then cries upon them disappearing. Starting in 2014, the panels have been used for various memes, including shitposts, redraws and as a reaction image. Most memes typically replace the text in the speech bubbles above Batman's head.
Origin
On March 11th, 2009, the Superman/Batman #56[1] issue of the series was released in the United States. In a particular panel of the comic, Batman is lured using a magical illusion of his parents in Crime Alley, which shows the character break down and cry over reviving the loss of his family (seen below).
YES! YES, THAT'S RIGHT!
YOU'RE SAFE NOW! YOU'RE…
NO. NO, STAY WITH ME!
DON'T LEAVE ME!!
Memes using the comic strip began appearing online as early as 2014, which typically edited the speech bubbles in the original. One of the earliest examples of it being used as a meme comes from a post by Redditor dgmockingjay on September 18th, 2014, to the /r/pcmasterrace[4] subreddit, which received over 3,500 upvotes and 260 comments in 10 years (shown below).
Spread
Batman's panels from Superman/Batman #56 comic book series have been repeatedly shared across social since early 2014, showcasing a rare instance in which the character feels vulnerable and emotional. For example, on June 24th, 2014, Redditor[2] therewasonce posted the comic book panel to /r/sadcomics, captioning it, "Don't leave me!!" The post (seen below) amassed more than 310 upvotes and 36 comments in 10 years.
The panel has also been used for redraws and reaction image memes on X / Twitter over the years. For example, X user @kivonotbabu[3] posted a version on August 30th, 2024, featuring Brazilian Miku replacing Batman's family amid the Brazil X / Twitter Ban Controversy. The post (seen below) amassed more than 415,000 likes and 54,000 reposts in a week.
