About

The Shorty Awards is an annual Spring awards ceremony streamed live which recognizing the people and organizations that produce real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and the rest of the social web.

Background

On February 11th, 2009,The first Shorty Awards ceremony was held at the Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, New York. The awards, in 26 categories, were voted on by Twitter users. The categories were best in Advertising, Apps, Brand, Business, Design, Education, Entertainment, Finance, Food, Green, Health, Humor, Music, News, Nonprofits, Personal, Photography, Politics, Science, Social Media, Sports, Startups, Tech, Travel, Video Games and Weird.[5]



In the years since, Winners have chosen through a combination of votes from the public and scores given by the Real Time Academy.

Developments

On January 28th, 2019 the nominees[2] for the 11th Annual Shorty Awards were announced:

  • Breakout YouTuber of the Year:
    Actually Happened, Ashley aka bestdressed, Denzel Dion, Dr. Mike, Haley Pham, Madelaine Petsch, Moriah Elizabeth, Peter McKinnon, Subhi Taha, Summer McKeen, TechMe0ut and Will Smith
  • Twitch Streamer of the Year: Adam Koebel, Becca, Cahlaflour, Castro_1021, ClassyKatie, DisguisedToast, itsHAFU, Ninja, Sweet_ Anita, TSM_Daequan, XCHOCOBARS and ZeRo
  • Vlogger of the Year: Ami Yamato, Chris Chann, Ellie Thumann, Josh Peck, Erika Costell, Heath Hussar, Justin Escalona, Mr. Beast, Nicole Laeno, Olivia Jade, Ryland Adams and Sara Dietschy
  • YouTube Comedian: Evelyn from the Internets, Gus Johnson, Jarvis Johnson, Joana Ceddia, Kalen Allen, Karina Garcia, MacDoesIt, Mikaela Long, Morgz, Nick Antonyan, Rachel Ballinger and Tré Melvin
  • YouTube Ensemble: Bright Sun Films, Brooklyn and Bailey, Cole&Sav, Familia Diamond, HellthyJunkFood, Jess and Gabriel, Merrell Twins, Sidemen, TFIL, The Try Guys, Yes Theory and Sister Squad
  • YouTuber of the Year: Andre "Black Nerd" Meadows, Colleen Ballinger, David Dobrik, DeStorm Power, Emma Chamberlain, Guava Juice, James Charles, Lauren Giraldo, Michelle Khare, Shane Dawson, Tana Mongeau and Zane Hijazi

The same day, YouTuber James Charles[4] Tweeted their response (shown below, left). The tweet garnered 2,185 retweets and 39,000 likes in a day. Other YouTubers, like BlackNerd[5] also responded to their nominations gaining 85 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, right).

Voting to determine the finalists and winners opens January 28, 2019 and closes on February 21 at 11:59PM ET.[5]

2019 Winners

On May 5th, The 11th Annual Shorty Awards hosted by Kathy Griffin were streamed live on YouTube from New York City (shown below). The video gained over 100,000 views and 3,500 likes in a day.



Some notable winners include Shane Dawson for YouTuber of the Year, Ninja for Twitch Streamer of the Year, and Is this a Pigeon? for best meme.[7]

Surprised RTGame didn't get a nomination for breakout YouTuber, though my perception of his quick rise in popularity just as I was finding and binging his stuff might be exaggerated. He or his uptick in subscribers could still be relatively small compared to those other nominees.

Or, the complete lack of PewDiePie and inclusion of Will Smith could be a reliable sign of low quality for this.
