Overview

Sidequesttherapy's "Trauma Dump" Video refers to a controversial video posted by a TikTok user with the handle @sidequesttherapy in which she lipsynced to the "Holy Spirit Activate" sound as a way to complain about clients "trauma dumping" on them in their first session. As "trauma dumping" means to express traumatic thoughts and feelings onto an unsuspecting and unprepared person, many users on social media took issue with the therapist complaining that a client would do this, as listening to the traumatic thoughts and feelings of a client is generally thought of as a therapist's job. The backlash caused @sidequesttherapy to delete their account.

Background

It's unclear when @sidequesttherapy first posted their video, but it first appeared on Twitter on October 19th, 2021. There, user @diligenda[1] posted a screenshot of the TikTok with the caption, "is it “trauma dumping” if you’re literally their therapist? if my therapist told me not to “trauma dump” on them i would start making my tapes." The tweet gained over 3,100 retweets and 34,000 likes (shown below).

User @liawithani was one of several Twitter users who reposted the original video (shown below).

Developments

The video was amplified on Twitter by several users who commented negatively on the screenshot. User @yumcoconutmilk[2] posted the screenshot with the caption "We live in hell," gaining over 6,200 retweets and 108,000 likes (shown below, left). By the end of October 19th, user @kittynouveau[3] posted screenshots showing that @sidequesttherapy had deleted their account (shown below, right).

As the screenshot spread on Twitter, multiple users, including therapists on Twitter, expressed that it was unprofessional of @sidequesttherapy to complain about trauma dumping. User @ElyKreimendahl[4] posted, "you CANNOT trauma dump on your therapist. It’s impossible. talking about your trauma however and whenever and as much as u want is literally why you’re there. If your therapist needs a trigger warning…….break up with her" (shown below, left). User @respexy[5] wrote, "I rarely make "I have an MSW and…" tweets but I guess this is worth it: I have an MSW and it is impossible to "trauma dump" on your THERAPIST. Even in relationships with laypeople, "talking about your trauma a bunch" is not even what "trauma dumping" MEANS" (shown below, right).
