The Mogg Conga was a term that refers to a new system used in the Houses of Parliament for Members of Parliament (MP)s to vote on issues and other matters in response to the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic.

The system was introduced by leader of the House of Commons Jacob-Rees Mogg after he decided to close the 'virtual parliament'.

The move from switching from a virtual parliament to the new voting line proposal was ridiculed, mocked and attacked by members of the public, MPs and the national and international media.

The Mogg Conga was the name given to the new initiative as the new proposal looked like a conga line.

Origin

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, the UK Parliament introduced a hybrid system which would allow MPs who were at home, be able to take part in debates and votes using technology.

The hybrid system was initially praised and MPs were said to find it very effective. The changes came into full effect in late April 2020.

Only weeks after starting the virtual parliament, leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg proposed closing it.

A vote was held on whether to close down the virtual parliament with 261 MPs voting in favour of the closure whilst 163 MPs opposed, the former winning a 98 majority.
