Overview

Unicorn Overlord Localization Controversy refers to the discourse surrounding the 2024 Atlus JRPG Unicorn Overlord and the changes made to the game from its original release to the Western release. These changes, made on behalf of the localization team, were met with backlash and flak from many in the Western video game community, leading to discussions on localization as a whole, video game versus anime localization and the game as a whole, particularly in late February 2024 following the demo release.

Background

On February 23rd, 2024, the game Unicorn Overlord, which is a Japanese RPG game often described by fans as a partial mix between Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem, had its demo released. On the official PlayStation YouTube[1] channel, a demo release trailer was shown for the PS4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, showing gameplay and explaining the overarching plot (shown below).

A few days later, after fans had time to play the demo and compare it to the original, posts began to appear decrying the localization effort and pointing to specific issues they had.

On February 25th, 2024, X / Twitter user @zakogdo[2] created a thread on X in which they listed several issues they had with the localization. One of the biggest issues regarded an early in-game conversation, which @zakogdo posits as a large change in tone and meaning (shown below).

Zakogdo @zakogdo In JP Alain is assuring Josef that his mother needs protection more than he does. In EN this is changed to Alain acting accusatory towards Josef and asking him why he isn't doing anything. This is one of the first lines in the game and immediately presents a different impression 王子アレイン ジョセフ…僕のことはいい お前も行って母上の力になってくれ Josef... I will be fine. You should lend your strength to my mother. 12:40 AM. Feb 25, 2024 85.1K Views Alain Why are you just standing there, Josef? Aren't you going to help her?

Online Reactions

As more people began to play the game and get into the discourse, the amount of people taking umbrage with the localization began to increase. On February 26th, 2024, X user @Scratch_Point_Z[3] uploaded some screenshots of in-game dialogue compared to a literal translation of the original writing. This was partnered with a caption that called out the way the localization team attempted to enhance the writing by adding several additional lines of dialogue that were not present in the original (shown below).

Scratch Point @Scratch_Point_Z Unicorn Overlord features flowery dialogue often imposed by localization upon JRPGs with medieval style settings. Localizers have tried to "improve" JP scripts for decades, it's time for an industry revamp with less leeway in deviating from the original. hting Renault with hnt strength would クライブ 現在の戦力ではルノーと戦うの 難しいと思われます Clive Casting the gauntlet at Renault's f would only send us all to an early スカーレット やっぱりなんでもない アレイン なんだ?気になるな スカーレット いろいろと突然のことだったから まだ実感が湧かなくて・・・・ アレイン ああ・・・たしかにそうだ llenia... What is it? Now I'm curious. Hm... It does feel that way. Scarlett No. it's nothing. Alain Are you sure? Anxiety will be the death of you if you keep it bottled up like that. Scarlett It's just, our lives have changed so drastically from the peace we had only yesterday. It barely seems real. Alain I can't say I feel any different. our futile resistance was actually an attempt >buy time for the prince to escape? Va

However, the demo had obtained many fans who were quick to defend the localization against the original translation. On February 26th, X user @SorenCaster[4] uploaded two different bits of dialogue from the game, saying that the dialogue "goes hard" and encouraging others to buy it, adding to a trend in which defenders of the game voiced their preference for the modified language (shown below).

Discourse about the localization controversy also appeared on Reddit in late February 2024. For example, a post on February 25th to the /r/KotakuInAction[5] subreddit with numerous screenshots of examples received over 200 upvotes and 50 comments in one day. Another that same day on /r/SubredditDrama[6] received over 30 upvotes and 40 comments in a similar timeframe.

As someone who not only has job experience in translation but also an actual (just bachelor's) degree in translating: it's a job that is difficult, thankless, and very poorly understood (why durr lemme just use google translate, it's as good as the real thing and doesn't ask money!). It requires indepth knowledge and mastery of both languages in order to best convery underlying concept.

What it ALSO ISN'T is this. Imagine a movie, in English, where the subtitle editor gets to freely change the script of the movie without any control or oversight, often inserting their own brain rot. Imagine a movie, where said subtitle editor publicly and loudly sneers at the scenario writer(s) and the director proclaiming their superiority (with a thick layer of not-so-subtle racism on top of that) and even demanding major credit.
In a normal industry, that editor would be sacked and blacklisted so fast, they wouldn't finish saying "patriarchy". But in japanese to english translation industry these types get people defending them for some insane reason. It's gotten so bad that people violently kneejerk at the usage of the word "localization" even though it's a basic part of the job in normal conditions, just because these editor types poisoned the well so thoroughly the job's language may never recover.
