About
The Face You Make, also known as That Face You Make, is an image macro series featuring photos of people wearing various facial expressions accompanied by descriptions of situations that cause corresponding emotional responses. The series bears many similarities to "My Face When" often used in green text stories on 4chan.
Origin
On March 2nd, 2006, blogger Charley Campbell used the phrase "the face you make" when mocking a photograph of himself shouting at the ceiling while packing (shown below).[2]
Spread
On March 17th, 2010, Bodybuilding Forums[6] member Mortum submitted a thread titled "Post the face you make when you're cumming," inviting users to post humorous images of characters wearing facial expressions that appear to be made during an orgasm. As early as March 2012, an I'm watching you illustration with the caption "that face you make when someone starts talking to your crush" began circulating online, often including a watermark for the site 9gag (shown below).[3]
On November 8th, 2013, a picture of the 30 Rock character Liz Lemon (played by Tina Fey) rolling her eyes in contempt was submitted to Meme Generator.[7] In March 2014, a Facebook[8] page titled "That Face You Make" was launched, which gained over 76,000 likes in the next two years. On October 21st, the Twitter feed @TheLadBible[9] posted a photograph of the character Peregrin Took from The Lord of the Rings film series accompanied by the caption "That face you make when you walk past someone you know, but not well enough to say hello" (shown below). In two years, the tweet gathered upwards of 4,500 likes and 4,000 retweets.
