Statement From Wattpad

On August 20th, a news update was posted to Wattpad^[9] to help clarify purported misconceptions about the guideline update. The post claims that the wording of the guidelines was changed, but that the moderation did not change. A breakdown of the changes is included, reading:

We reorganized our Content Guidelines into clear, easy-to-navigate sections.

We reorganized how we describe what is allowed overall, what we consider Mature, and the kinds of content that are prohibited, making guidance more explicit.

We added examples to clarify the differences between the content ratings for Everyone vs Mature.

We added clarity around guidelines for Fanfic, Real person fic, and One Shots.

The last paragraph of the post reads:

Wattpad has always been a place to tell stories that are steamy, complicated, romantic, weird, emotional, and everything in between. That isn't changing and hasn't changed. Steamy stories are still welcome, celebrated, and loved on Wattpad, and now writers have more direct guidance to ensure stories align with our Content Guidelines.

The updated content guidelines inspired discourse and memes about a so-called "Wattpad migration" to other fiction publishing sites, primarily AO3.

On August 16th, 2026, Redditor Silver_Pack_4046 posted a collection of memes to the /r/AO3^[3] subreddit about the AO3 community showing Wattpad users how to use the website, gaining over 230 upvotes in 11 days.

Also on August 20th, 2026, Redditor Sammysemsalamy posted a post to the /r/AO3^[8] subreddit blaming a Wattpad migrant for leaving a comment complaining about the content of their story on their story, garnering over 6,500 upvotes in a week.
