About

"Everlong" Slowed + Reverb Meme Trend, also known as "Everlong" Slowed Remix by Spxrnn, refers to a slowed + reverb remix of the rock song "Everlong" by Foo Fighters which became a meme on TikTok in late 2023. In the "Everlong" trend, creators paused videos at their crucial moments (often showing someone staring blankly due to a realization) for minutes on end, making the video as long as they could. The trend was likened to the Thousand Yard Stare meme and its corresponding painting titled The 2,000 Yard Stare by artist Thomas Lea.

Origin

The song "Everlong" by Foo Fighters was originally released on August 18th, 1997, on the band's album The Colour and the Shape.[1] On October 3rd, 2009, the song's original music video was uploaded to YouTube[2] gaining roughly 281.3 million views in 14 years (shown below).

Years later, on March 17th, 2023, TikToker[3] @spxrnn posted a roughly five-minute-long slowed + reverb remix of the song, receiving roughly 653,700 plays and 34,700 likes in seven months (shown below, left). The video's sound[4] received general usage on TikTok[5] as early as March 2023. However, memetic usage and the "Everlong" trend didn't start until August 20th, 2023, when TikToker[6] @lxartz posted a video that paused on a kid learning that his mom was pregnant, receiving roughly 4.2 million plays and 693,100 likes in two months (shown below, right).

Spread

In the months that followed the aforementioned video, many on TikTok copied the format, using different viral videos that showcased some type of stare or realization.

For instance, one of the earliest variations was a video posted by TikToker[7] @samuelzxkkjkofc on August 22nd, 2023, showing a Spanish meme about Poggers, gaining roughly 242,700 plays and 44,700 likes in two months (shown below, left). On September 28th, TikToker[8] @lxartz posted an iteration using a Skippy commercial from 2016[9] in which a boy says he's so hungry that he could eat a horse (similar to the How Hungry meme). The video received roughly 9.5 million plays and 1.9 million likes in 12 days (shown below, right).

Going into October 2023, the format and trend persisted on TikTok, becoming increasingly viral. For instance, on October 2nd, TikToker[10] @letsgo23117 posted a video using the sound[4] that received roughly 22.3 million plays and 3.3 million likes in nine days (shown below).
