Fart Jars

About

A Fart Jar is a fart that has been sealed in a jar, usually to be sold for profit by people on the internet. Selling fart jars became increasingly popularized among streamers and internet personalities starting in 2021, with streamers including Amouranth taking part in the trend during the early 2020s. The virality of the trend was partly inspired by Belle Delphine's Gamer Girl Bath Water.

History

On January 5th, 2012, GuySpeed^[1] posted an article about an eBay^[2] user named kbug1978 selling her fart in a jar. The article mentioned that two bids had been placed, the top one at the time for $2.50. The listing is no longer available, but the article shared the listing's description, which explains how she got the idea, reading:

"Okay so here is the story. I joined the gym and started to eat right. Well apparently my body is not used to the 'Healthy Food' that its been given and is giving me some pretty harsh smelling gas. You know the ones that kind of burn when they come out. Well, I farted by my brother and it made him literally sick. He said I should 'Sell That Sh*t' So I decided to take his word for it. I have been doing research on the best ways to fart in a container and have the smell be just as potent as a fresh fart. So not to give you all my details it starts in the tub. That way I am able to capture a fairly pure fart uncontaminated by atmospheric air. So if you want a REAL gag gift….this would be great! ( I have tested farts up to two weeks and they are still 100% potent as the first fart) When you purchase the Fart In a Jar, I will also be sending a picture of myself! Thanks for looking….Have a great day."

On February 25th, 2015, NY Daily News^[3] reported on a Kickstarter^[4] fundraiser by a company called "Farts in a Jar" that looked to, if fully funded, allow people to purchase farts from around the world. A purchaser could request the nationality of the fart they want and have it sent to them. The project only received $169 CAD of its $12,638 goal with 10 backers total. On October 9th, 2017, the BuzzFeedVideo YouTube^[5] channel posted a video where a reporter buys a fart in a jar from eBay and has people from around the office smell it, gaining over 4.1 million views in five years (shown below). In October 2017, a story about a Tennessee man being arrested for selling jars of farts without a vendor's license began circulating online.^[6] The story is reportedly fake according to an investigation by Still Unfold.^[7]

Lush Botanist

On August 19th, 2021, the Channel 4 Facebook^[8] page posted an interview and profile piece on model Lush Botanist about making over $25,000 selling fart videos, as well as jarred farts, gaining over 2.9 million views and 13,000 reactions in eight months (shown below, reupload). LADBible^[9] also reported on the story on the 25th. In the video, she explains how she's lactose intolerant and sometimes triggers the condition on purpose to make her farts worse.

Stephanie Matto

Influencer and 90 Day Fiance star Stephanie Matto helped popularize the trend of fart jars in late 2021. On November 23rd, 2021, she posted a TikTok^[10] that earned roughly 7.6 million plays and 427,800 likes in five months. In it, Matto stated in text overlay, "Day in the life of a girl who sells her farts in a jar" (shown below).

On November 29th, she uploaded another TikTok^[11] about selling farts in jars, answering questions she'd received from her previous video. The TikTok earned roughly 353,400 plays and 8,000 likes in five months (shown below, left). She continued to post "fart jar" TikToks going into December 2021. As an example, she posted one^[12] on December 16th that earned roughly 1.2 million plays and 14,200 likes in four months (shown below, right). She also began a "fart jar" NFT project.^[13]

On January 4th, 2022, it was reported by the NY Post^[14] that Matto had to stop selling her farts due to a hospital visit, reportedly caused by "her steady diet of gas-inducing beans and eggs." After allegedly making more than $50,000 a week, totaling roughly $200,000 in sales, Matto was rushed to a hospital with chest pains she feared were symptoms of a heart attack (photo of her in hospital shown below).

Amouranth's "CUTIE PA-TOOT-IES"

On February 28th, 2022, Twitch streamer Amouranth announced the launch of her new company and website^[16] Cutie Pa-Toot-Ies on Twitter,^[15] gaining over 26,000 likes in two months (shown below). The website offers Amouranth's hot tub water for roughly $100 USD, on sale at the time of writing for $50, as well as jarred farts for $999.99, on sale for $399.99 at the time of writing. The jars are sold in a limited quantity of 1,000. Each jar also contains a strand of Amouranth's hair. On that day, Amouranth posted a video to YouTube showing her making a fart jar, gaining over 76,000 views in two months (shown below).

On May 3rd, Amouranth posted an ASMR video where she opens and smells her own fart jar, then replaces it on camera, gaining over 83,000 views in three days (shown below). After smelling the jar she makes a disgusted face, saying it's still "pretty strong."

Reactions

A variety of creators have gone viral filming their reactions to smelling fart jars, some reacting with disgust and shock while others find there to be very little scent. For example, on December 16th, 2021, YouTuber^[17] Famous News posted a video where he reacts to Stephanie Matto's fart jar, reacting with disgust and gagging after inhaling, gaining over 93,000 views in four months (shown below).

In March 2022, several YouTubers uploaded reactions to Amouranth's fart jars, including Mizkif, (shown below, left) the H3 Podcast, Hasan Piker and Penguinz0 (shown below, right).
