In January 2022, the video inspired recaption memes referencing various films by describing their plot details and characters.

Origin

Prior to January 21st, 2022, TikToker^[1] @googlyeyedpickle uploaded a humorous video within the January 2022 "shocked face" trend.^[2] In the video, which has since been removed, @googlyeyedpickle made an expression of shock and indignation, with the video captioned, "film bros when you tell them u want to watch a marvel movie and not a 2 hour black and white movie about the Serbian government shown through the eyes of a pigeon."

On January 21st, 2022, Twitter^[3] user @booorgan posted a screenshot of the video to Twitter, where it gained over 17,200 retweets and 216,300 likes in three days (shown below).

Spread

Starting on the same day, the post became a subject of jokes and parodies. For example, on January 22nd, 2022, Twitter^[4] user @SonnyBunch tweeted, "tell me more about this pigeon movie," with the tweet gaining 45 retweets and over 870 likes in two days (shown below, left). On the same day, Twitter^[5] user @mothmanshawty recaptioned the image, with the post gaining 66 retweets and over 780 likes in two days (shown below, right).

On January 22nd, Twitter^[6] user @firagwalkwthme posted the first recaption meme parodying the original, adding several references to Ratatouille. The post gained over 10,300 retweets and 165,500 likes in two days (shown below, left). In the following days, the format achieved virality in the /r/moviecirclejerk^[7] subreddit, with multiple edits submitted by users (example shown below, right).
