Ratatouille is the name of the 2007 animated Pixar movie that takes place in a fictionalized version of France starring a rat, named Remy, who wishes to cook like a real chef. Joining forces with a human chef named Linguini, who is a horrible cook, the two assist each other in reaching their goals of becoming renowned culinary experts. Since its release, Ratatouille has become a frequent source of memes online across a wide array of sites and platforms.

History

Ratatouille was originally conceived in 2000, but it wouldn't begin production until 2005. According to Pixar, the movie required many real-world references, such as food, rats and kitchen layout and techniques in order to properly showcase French cuisine. The trailer for the movie was posted to YouTube^[1] on April 5th, 2007, receiving 3.3 million views and 4,500 likes in 14 years (shown below). The movie was released on June 29th, 2007.

Reception

Ratatouille was a box office success upon release with $620.7 million in revenue generated off a budget of $150 million. It was later awarded the Academy Award for "Best Animated Feature," among many other awards won by the movie. As of May 12th, 2021, Ratatouille has a 96 percent critic rating and an 87 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.^[4] On Metacritic,^[5] the film has a critic rating of 96 percent and an 8.6 out of 10 for users.

Premise

The premise of Ratatouille is that the field rat Remy (Patton Oswalt) is more sophisticated than the rest of his family. He has an appreciation for civilized living, such as standing on two feet, and he especially loves cooking. Being a rat, he does not get to cook often, only ever using table scraps from the trash to mix together, but he dreams of one day getting his moment. After ending up in Paris, he finds a young chef named Linguini (voiced by Lou Romano) who is absolutely horrible at cooking. Remy and Linguini come to understand each other, with Remy able to guide Linguini into cooking fabulous meals as the pair goes on to be successful.
