About

"Fuckin' Hot (Kuso Atsui)" (Japanese: ファッキンホット (くそ熱い)) refers to an image with the phrase uttered by a Canadian woman complaining about hot water. Since the /b/ board users in Futaba Channel (2chan) turned it into a reaction image for hot weather in the late-2000s, the image has become an icon of hot summers. Her remark also became internet slang among Japanese Twitter users since 2013.

Origin

On March 12th, 2004, the Japanese midnight TV show Knight Scoop[1] aired "When foreigners get into hot water" (外国人が熱い湯に入ったら), a short movie showing each reaction of Japanese, French, Pakistani, Canadian, and American persons getting into a bathtub with very hot water. The 4th Canadian woman in the footage uttered this phrase, including the F-word. The show gave subtitles with literal translations of her remark and aired it without censorship (shown below).

Spread

According to Nico Nico Pedia[2] and Pixiv Encyclopedia,[3] 2chan's /b/ users turned the screencap of this woman into a reaction image for hot weather sometime in the late-2000s, though it didn't spread beyond the imageboard community at that point. The image began growing more popular in the summer of 2013, when Twitter users heavily cited her remark and the screencap to complain about the historically fierce heat that struck Japan between July and August.

Since then, the image's online presence has been growing every year, coinciding with global warming. The image will occasionally be used to comment on something sexy, attractive, or exciting, as the Japanese word Atsui (熱い or アツい) has a similar double meaning to "Hot" in English. means Besides, she sometimes receives parody illustrations and videos on online communities.[4][5][6]

In December 2013, the Japanese rock band Hysteric Panic (ヒステリックパニック)[7] released the song "Fuckin' Hot" (ファッキンホット) using the Canadian woman for its thumbnail (shown below, left). In the smartphone app game Fate/Grand Order, the servant Anastasia[8] says, "GODDAMN HOT (Messa Atsui wa)" (ガッデムホット (めっさ暑いわ)), in the limited event "Servant Summer Festival! 2018"[9] (below, right). The game's players recognize it's a parody of "Fuckin' Hot (Kuso Atsui)" while avoiding the F-word because the game often parodies tropes, cliches, and internet memes, according to Pixiv Encyclopedia.[10]
