About
Gahhh, I Don't Get It, Is It Political?? refers to an image of a comic character overanalyzing a silly cartoon, trying to find some hidden message in it. The image, which originates from a comic by Really Good Comics, has been used as an exploitable meme and reaction online for instances of people trying to view apolitical entertainment through a prism of politics, and with the image on the screen often replaced with the subject of their efforts.
Origin
On September 17th, 2018, webcomic artist Really Good Comics (@ReallyGoodComics) posted a nine-panel comic about a character overanalyzing a silly cartoon and trying to find a deeper meaning in it to X / Twitter and Gab[1] (censored version shown below, left; X post since removed). In the third panel of the comic, a character is looking at the cartoon on their computer screen, exclaiming, "Gahhh… I DON'T GET IT. Is it political?? What's the message in this????" (censored version shown below, right).
Spread
The panel has been used as a reaction image at least since December 2019. The earliest post using an edited version of the panel was made on X / Twitter and is no longer available, but was scrubbed by image search website TinEye.[2] On August 18th, 2020, iFunny[3] user spongecuck posted the panel to the platform.
On May 23rd, 2022, iFunny[4] user OurLordAboveAll posted the earliest discovered edit of the panel currently available online, replacing the cartoon on the computer screen with an image of K-On! characters. The post (shown below) garnered over 120 smiles in two years.
More edits of the image were posted on iFunny, X,= and other sites in 2022 and the following years. For example, on August 30th, 2022, iFunny[5] user PolishLithuania posted a version referencing comedian Sam Hyde calling out streamer HasanAbi, with the edit garnering over 8,000 smiles on the platform in two years.
On May 28th, 2023, X[6] user @SVVAYED posted a The Lord of the Rings edit that gained over 150 reposts and 1,700 likes in one year (shown below, right).
The panel and its edits saw more use online in the following years, being used to poke fun at people trying to find political or other meaning in media with no clear message.
