Garfielf

About

Garfielf refers to an intentionally poor quality parody video of Garfield, made by Jim Davis. The popularity of the original video spawned a number of remakes and parodies featuring MS Paint artwork and the same voices for text-to-speech narration.

Origin

On April 4th, 2013, YouTube user PilotRedSun uploaded a video entitled "Garfielf". The video consists of various MS Paint renderings of Garfield and Jon being voiced by the VoiceForge text-to-speech narrators Wiseguy and Jerkface, respectively.^[1] The video also contains the psychedelic rock song "Coc'n Rolla" by Begnagrad.^[7]

Spread

On February 28th, 2014, YouTube user Nano reuploaded the same video, but with his voice replacing the Text to Speech (TTS).

Other people would create videos made up of MS Paint drawings of Garfield character in which Jon and Garfield were voiced by the same TTS, acting similarly to how Garfield and Jon acted in "Garfielf." Videos featuring non-Garfield characters that saw them acting and being voiced like Garfield and Jon in "Garfielf" were also made. For example, on February 5th, 2019, YouTuber Sean uploaded a parody that gained over 56,000 views in four years (shown below). The TTS voices used in the original became so ubiquitous that they would be used to voice the characters in non-Garfielf Garfield videos.

SiIvaGunner References

On June 24th, 2016, the YouTube channel SiIvagunner uploaded "Menu – Garfield," (shown below, left) a Garfielf parody featuring the mascot and main protagonist of the channel, SiIva, and 7 Grand Dad being voiced by the Wiseguy and Jerkface TTS voices, respectively. On October 25th, 2016, "Title Theme & Ending – 7 GRAND DAD", (shown below, right) was uploaded as part of the staged ending to the channel. At the end, an animation featuring SiIva displayed him being voiced by the same Wiseguy TTS. From then on, SiIva was voiced by the Wiseguy TTS in all contexts.

Multiple other Garfielf parodies would be uploaded to the channel, such as "Main Theme – Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt".^[2] Garfielf was also present in references, such as in the video "Main Theme – A Week of Garfield", which was stylized like a Garfielf video, with still MS Paint drawings, and saw the character Mike Matei voiced by the Jerkface TTS.^[3]

Fist of the Borf Star

On June 29th, 2015, the channel Lycan Jonze uploaded the video "Garfield breaks Jon", a Garfielf parody that featured a fight in the style of Dragon Ball Z. It would receive more than 115,000 views over the next 2 years.^[4] On January 9th, 2018, the channel was terminated for unknown reasons.^[5] On July 4th, 2018, the owner of Lycan Jonze created a new channel.^[6]
