About
>Gets Criticized>Fucking Dies is a catchphrase used to comment on occurrences when someone is unable to take criticism to such a degree that they completely quit what they're doing. Spawned by a viral tweet, the catchphrase is a subformat of the Fucking Dies meme and a version of the Can't Take Criticism trope.
Origin
On May 30th, 2021, Twitter[1] user @RealYouTubeKids posted a Fucking Dies joke about the Ratatouille character Chef Gusteau, who dies of a broken heart after his restaurant loses one of his stars over a scathing review (shown below, left). Within one hour, an anonymous 4chan[2] user posted a greentext based on the tweet, with the /co/ thread gaining over 170 replies.
Spread
In the following weeks, a screenshot of the 4chan thread was widely circulated online; for example, on May 31st, 2021, Redditor[3] The_Chosen_Boy posted the screenshot, with the post gaining over 13,700 upvotes in the /r/me_irl subreddit in one year.
On June 16th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @SoupMarioGamer posted the first derivative meme based on the original post, replacing Chef Gusteau with Five Nights at Freddy's developer Scott Cawthon, who had recently retired after a controversy. The post (shown below) gained over 920 retweets and 3,800 likes in one year. On June 17th, 2022, Redditor[5] USrooster reposted the meme to /r/Gamingcirclejerk, where it gained over 20,100 upvotes in one year.
In 2021 and 2022, more edits of the 4chan post were posted on Twitter and other social media, while the phrase ">gets criticized >fucking dies" was used to comment on people taking criticism poorly.
