Girlfoe is a slang term used in a series of memes based on a viral X Implies the Existence of Y meme, reading, "The term girlfriend implies the existence of a girlfoe. This is a service I am willing to provide." The post was made by X / Twitter user @EveBelleSongs in March 2021 and became the subject of memes over the following years, in which the phrase is attributed to various female characters.
Origin
On March 2nd, 2021, X[1] user @EveBelleSongs posted, "The term girlfriend implies the existence of a girlfoe. This is a service I am willing to provide," garnering over 122,000 likes and 18,000 reposts in three years (shown below).
Spread
The meme gained viral spread over the following years, with the post text being used as a catchphrase in memes. On December 15th, 2022, it was reposted to the subreddit /r/actuallesbians,[2] garnering over 3,000 upvotes in two years. On March 1st, 2023, Tumblr[3] user piracytheorist posted a meme using the post that gained over 1,700 notes in a year.
On November 19th, 2023, a version of the meme referencing Baldur's Gate 3 was posted to /r/BaldursGate3,[4] garnering over 1,700 upvotes in nine months (shown below).
On July 15th, 2024, X[5] user @All_Lee24 posted a meme using the phrase that gained over 39,000 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On July 16th, X[6] user @KannaMastermind posted a similar version of the meme that gained over 51,000 likes in roughly the same span of time (shown below, right).
