About

Girls Reacting to Bikinis refers to a fan art trend inspired by an illustration of Hatsune Miku holding up a string bikini on a hanger, then grimacing towards the viewer. The illustration was originally posted to Twitter in June 2023, quickly becoming an exploitable redraw format among artists.

Origin

On June 1st, 2023, Twitter user @_CASTSTATION tweeted a two-panel illustration of Hatsune Miku holding up a skimpy string bikini on a hanger, looking towards it in the first panel, then grimacing towards the viewer in the second panel (shown below), and the text 「今回の衣装だよ」 roughly translating to "Your outfit for today", implying her producer told her to wear it. The tweet received over 180,000 likes and 18,800 retweets in 1 month.[1]

Spread

Following the extremely positive reception of the original illustration, other artists began to illustrate other characters in the same situation. For example, on June 3rd, Twitter user @PoopingIRL tweeted the first known redraw, featuring their original character, a robot maid (shown below, left). The tweet received over 14,000 and 770 retweets in 1 month.[2] On June 13th, @BlueButt05 tweeted an illustration resembling the format, featuring Peni Parker (shown below, right). The tweet received over 57,800 likes and 3,800 retweets in 3 weeks.[3]

Gleaming Steel
Gleaming Steel

By far the most realistic and relatable re-draw meme I've seen in years.
This is the exact reaction my girlfriend makes whenever I show her something lewd I want her to wear for me.

Just that look of pure befuddled dread like "Is this really a real thing that exists? Why?" mixed with "Oh god just thinking of wearing this is going to make me die of embarrassment"
