Good Dog Greg is an advice animal image macro series that features a photo of a dog looking up toward the camera accompanied by captions portraying the dog as a selfless benefactor, similar to its precursor Good Guy Greg.

Origin

The original photo was taken by photographer Andrea Nelson at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley in Hailey, Idaho. The dog's real name was "Smilin' Trudy" and was written about in an article on the Sun Valley^[11] website on March 17th, 2008.

The photo was posted to Reddit^[4] by user laketrash in a thread titled "Guilty Smile" on September 9th, 2011 and accumulated 7,299 up votes in less than 2 months . The first known instance of the macro was subsequently posted to Quickmeme^[5] the same day with the caption "Paws wet / stays on carpet."

The Quickmeme submission was posted to Reddit^[1] by user kartoffelheinz and a compilation of Good Dog Greg image macros was posted to the blog Irene's Internet^[6] on September 9th. A Cheezburger template^[3] has accumulated 163 submissions, the Quickmeme^[2] page has received 784 submissions and a Facebook^[7] fan page has 9 likes as of October 25th, 2011. Derivatives can be found on FunnyJunk^[8], Tumblr^[9] and Memebase.^[10]
