Grug

About

Grug refers to an illustrated character who resembles a caveman variation of Wojak and is typically accompanied by captions or messages written in Hulk speak.^[4]

Origin

On February 15th, 2013, the animated film The Croods was released, which featured the caveman character Grug Crood (voiced by Nicolas Cage) as an overprotective father (shown below).

The earliest known 4chan post written as the character Grug was submitted to the /tg/ board on July 29th, 2014. In the thread, several anonymous users submitted posts roleplaying a caveman character using Hulk speak (shown below, left). On October 16th, 2017, a user submitted an illustation of a caveman Wojak-like character along with a Hulk speak message joking about staying home with a dakimakura (shown below, right).^[5]

Spread

On October 23rd, 2017, the illustration of Grug was submitted to Shitpostbot 5000 (shown below). On November 22nd, an anonymous 4chan user used the Grug illustration in a post mocking those who oppose net neutrality.^[6]

On November 23rd, Redditor GodLovesAll32 submitted a Runescape themed Grug image to /r/2007scape,^[1] where it gained over 1,100 points (94% upvoted) and 100 comments within four months (shown below). On February 8th, 2018, an anonymous 4chan user submitted a post written from the perspective of Grug to /biz/,^[2] which referenced Dutch tulip mania^[3] in the early 1600s.
