Hand Scanner Video Fail

Hand Scanner Video Fail refers to a viral video in which Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto, the Mayor of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, touched a television screen with the outline of a handprint, as if the television was scanning his hand. However, the screen didn't have a touch screen function, and the animation that played after he "scanned" his hand was shown to be a video after the video player UI accidentally appeared when he touched it. The video became a source of edits and redraws on social media.

Origin

On March 1st, 2024, TikTok^[1] user @infopemkotmakassar uploaded a video about the Government of Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, releasing a new program called SIMBG. The Mayor of Makassar, Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto, touched a screen with a handprint, as if a scan of his hand was the key to release the program. However, a video player's UI appeared on screen as he touched it, showing that the ensuing animation was a pre-recorded video. The video received more than 4.1 million views in three days (shown below).

Over the following few days, the video became a popular source of discourse, edits, and parodies. For example on March 2nd, 2024, Reddit^[2] user bigbackclock7 reposted the video to the /r/maybemaybemaybe subreddit. The video received more than 9,800 points in two days (shown below).

On March 3rd, 2024, Facebook^[3] user Nan Nda uploaded an edit making it look as though the mayor was playing Genshin Impact to the "Genshin Impact Indonesia Official" group. The post received more than 1,200 reactions and 300 shares in one day (shown below, left). On the same day, Facebook^[4] user Saebrin uploaded an edit as if the mayor was touching an Arena of Valor character's breasts to the "Arena of Valor University Indonesia Terbuka" group. The post received more than 8,500 reactions and 1,700 shares in one day (shown below, right).

On March 2nd, 2023, Facebook^[5] user Surya uploaded a redraw based on the video. It received more than 2,200 shares in two days (shown below, left). On the next day, Facebook^[6] user Mas Yu uploaded a redraw of the character Aru from Blue Archive using the video as a reference to the "Blue Archive Indonesia" group. The post received more than 5,600 reactions and 2,100 shares in one day (shown below, right).
