About

Happy Ghast is a larger, friendlier variant of the traditional hostile Ghast mob in Minecraft, introduced during the March 22, 2025, Minecraft Live event. The Happy Ghast can be created by rehydrating a new block called the Dried Ghast in the Nether. Players can bring the Dried Ghast aboveground and feed him water to turn him into a Ghastling that later grows into a Happy Ghast. The Happy Ghast acts as a large moving platform players can climb onto and direct to travel, explore, or race. The update inspired fan art and discussions soon after it was announced in late March. While an exact date has not been specified, the Happy Ghast will be included in a Minecraft update later in 2025.

Origin

The Happy Ghast was announced during the March 22nd, 2025 Minecraft Live event. In a YouTube[1] video posted on March 22nd, 2025, Minecraft developers introduced the Happy Ghast as a "mob variant that thrives in the Overworld." The video gathered over 1 million views in two days. The news was also shared in a tweet[2] thread posted on the same date, gathering over 8 million views and 7,000 likes in two days.

Players can find the Dried Ghast in the Nether. The block resembles a small, desiccated Ghast. To transform the Dried Ghast into a Ghastling, players must transport it to the Overworld and submerge it in water. After approximately 20 real-world minutes (or sooner if fed snowballs) the block rehydrates into a Ghastling. Over time, the Ghastling matures into a full-sized Happy Ghast.

This gameplay was explained in a YouTube[3] video posted by the official Minecraft channel on March 22nd, 2025, titled, "The Deep Dig – FLYING ON A HAPPY GHAST." The post gathered over 200,000 views in two days.

My initial reaction to seeing the Happy Ghast was "It looks HIDEOUS". I don't mind the concept itself – in fact I predict that I'm probably going to use Happy Ghasts for travelling and building quite a lot – but I can't stand that its texture has double the resolution than that of the normal Ghast. It's like it's using one of those x32 texture packs, which I hate with a passion. It fundamentally goes against the vanilla style of the game in my opinion. Good thing the game easily lets you fix any visual with a resource pack.

I like the concept, the mob itself looks cute and I like it …. THAT SAID, the saddle feels … out of place, Idk how else I'd describe it , like it came out of a mod, the saddle is my sole grip with this mob, otherwise … precious baby.
