About
Healing Tones refers to a trend on TikTok in which users act out stressful or awkward situations from their daily lives while a calming meditation song plays in the background. The sound used in these videos is called, "Healing Tones by ZenLifeRelax," and is originally meant to be played at a specific frequency to encourage the mind to relax.[1] Videos following this trend are often posted under the hashtag #HealingTones.
Origin
On September 10th, 2020, TikToker cheeseblaster[2] uploaded a skit where a customer subtly hits on a cashier, in which cheeseblaster plays both roles (shown below). The skit is set to the original sound "Healing Tones by ZenLifeRelax," which was uploaded by cheeseblaster for this video, the first of the trend. The skit gained over 2.9 million views and 753 thousand likes in just under a month.

Spread
Over the course of September, more TikTokers found success with the format. On September 11th, 2020, TikToker kyrruisha[3] uploaded a skit depicting an uncomfortable situation between a hotel receptionist and a customer (shown below, left). This video gained over 2.7 million views and 283 thousand likes in under a month. On September 12th, TikToker moldytoad[4] uploaded a skit depicting an awkward dinner between a daughter and her absent father, garnering over 570 thousand views and 144 thousand likes by October 5th (shown below, right).

On September 20th, TikToker theaverageposer[5] uploaded a version of the trend set at a doctors office during COVID-19, garnering over 1.6 million views in 15 days (shown below, left). On October 2nd, TikToker xtinewagz[6] uploaded a skit featuring an awkward situation between a cleaning lady and her employer, garnering over 603 thousand views in three days (shown below, right).

In early October, #HealingTones hit TikTok's trending page. As of October 5th, the original sound by cheeseblaster has been used over 930 times. Videos under the #HealingTones hashtag have gained over 36.9 million total views.
