About

"Hello Soybeans Song" (Japanese: ハロー大豆の歌, Hello Daizu no Uta) is a strange character song[1] in the TV anime series for a Japanese manga Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens.[2] This song became to a popular subject for parodies among Japanese internet users due to its laughable lyrics and the literally "fierce sex appeal" face by Nagi, the main character in this anime.

Origin

The TV anime series for Kannagi aired 13 episodes from October to December in 2008, and the scene where Nagi was singing "Hello Soybean Song" in a karaoke box was appeared on the 10th episode "The Karaoke Warrior, Mike Takako", which was aired on December 6th.[3] This song is written in the manner of typical Japanese commercial songs, and it's also drawn as a song for an imaginary food company called "Dokkoi Foods" (どっこい食品).

This Karaoke box scene authentically reproduced the original manga's episode including this incoherent lyrics. The melody for this song was composed for the animation by the creator, Eri Takenashi, and arranged by Satoru Kōsaki[5], Japanese anime/game composer known for his many works as represented by "Motteke Sailor Fuku!" in Lucky Star and "Renai Circulation" in Monogatari Series.

Spread

This ridiculous song soon got a much attention among viewers due to its impressive facial expression for "fierce sex appeal" and the help of a weird but earnest performance by the voice actor for Nagi, Haruka Tomatsu.[6] Then triggered by a hand-drawn animated video reproducing that scene by Minoriko Aki from Touhou Project, "Hello Soybeans Song" became to a subject for parodies and a vocal resource for MAD videos on NND.[7]
