Hilarious Jokes to Tell Yourself refers to an exploitable computer-rendered image of a book with the snowclone title "X and Other Hilarious Jokes to Tell Yourself." X is often a lie a person tells themselves, such as "I watch anime but I'm not a weeaboo."
Origin
On January 20th, 2015, Tumblr [4] user 8-bitfiction published the earliest known image, which featured the text "When Will I Ever Be The Crush? And Other Hilarious Jokes You Can Tell Yourself Volume II." The post received more than 48,000 notes in less than six years (shown below).
Spread
On March 27th, 2018, Redditor I_AM_DAN_THE_ROBOT posted a version of the meme to /r/MemeEconomy,[1] where it gained over 24,000 upvotes and signaled a resurgence (shown below).
The same image was reposted to /r/dankmemes several hours later, where it gained over 1,100 upvotes.[2] It was also posted to /r/animemes[3] where it gained over 640 upvotes. The template spread primarily in those two subreddits. In /r/dankmemes, popular posts with the template include a post that gained over 250 upvotes mocking recent Facebook controversy (shown below, left) and a post mocking Middle Eastern people, which gained over 230 upvotes (shown below, right).
In /r/animemes, popular posts with the template include a post mocking JoJo's Bizarre Adventure character Kakyoin that gained over 630 upvotes (shown below, left) and a Traps Are Gay joke that gained over 60 upvotes (shown below, right).
