His Name Is X, Look Him Up refers to a series of ironic Don't Google memes that semi-seriously bait users into Googling NSFW imagery. Launched by a viral Discord GIF inviting users to look up a cute cat, the bait format achieved virality in early 2022.
Origin
On December 22nd and 24th, 2020, Tenor[1][2] user Dimden uploaded a collection of GIFs of a cat influencer named Tudou (ch. Potato), uploading more GIFs of the cat in 2021 (uploads and GIF example shown below, left and right). Because of the uploader's name, the GIFs would be shown on Discord when a user searched of "Dimden."
Prior to July 9th, an unknown Tenor user uploaded a GIF caption that invited users to search for "dimden" on Discord (original post not available). On July 19th, 2021, iFunny[3] user Reflect uploaded the GIF (shown below).
Spread
On July 21st, 2021, Tenor[4] user govenorred made the earliest GIF caption that used the "His Name Is X, Look Him Up" caption format to bait unsuspecting users into looking up unrelated imagery, in this case, sexually provocative GIFs by artist Diives (GIF caption shown below, left). On October 12th, 2021, Tenor[5] user ASTROHOO made a similar meme, this time baiting users to look up GIFs by artist TwistedGrim (GIF caption shown below, right).
The format did not achieve significant spread outside of Discord until late November 2021, when a version of the GIF captioned, "this cats name is gay porn," went viral[6] (original uploaded unknown; shown below, left). On November 26th, 2021, Twitter[7] user @calicokritter posted a photograph of another cat, captioning it, "his name is big boobs look him up on your school computer." The post gained pver 10,700 retweets and 91,600 retweets in seven months (shown below, right).
Following the November posts, the bait format achieved significant presence online, primarily on Twitter and Discord, with "his name is gay porn," "his name is big boobs" and "his name is how to make a bomb" all becoming prominent versions within the trend.
