About
El Changuito or Sicario Monkey is a spider monkey owned by a member of La Familia Michoacana, a Mexican drug cartel, that was killed during a shootout with Mexican authorities in June 2022 alongside his owner. The monkey died in a bulletproof vest, images of which went viral online. His death inspired tributes across social media, including a narcocorrido song in his honor and a Meme Heaven photoshop that also went viral.
Origin
On May 11th, 2022, roughly a month before his death, Twitter[1] user @JamesPorrazzo posted a video allegedly showing El Changuito riding shotgun in a car holding a gun, captioned, "'Pulled up with no flag, but they knew that I was Gang,'" gaining over 70 likes in a month (shown below).

On June 14th, Publimetro[2] reported that a shootout in Texcaltitlán, State of Mexico, between the La Familia Michoacana cartel and the National Guard left 11 dead. On June 16th, Publimetro[3] reported that a spider monkey named El Changuito, owned by one of the dead cartel members, was killed in the shootout. The monkey was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time and allegedly died next to his master with his arms outstretched (shown below).

On June 17th, 2022, Twitter[4] user @demoniottv posted a video consisting of images and video clips of El Changuito over an original narcocorrido, or "drug ballad," celebrating El Changuito's life, gaining over 770 likes and 240 retweets in six days (shown below).

One of the images in the slideshow is a Meme Heaven photoshop showing El Changuito in the gates of heaven. The image was posted to Twitter[5] by user @Xaniken on June 17th, writing, "A monkey was killed in a cartel shootout and they made this," gaining over 71,000 likes and 10,000 retweets in six days (shown below). El Changuito's death was reported on by a variety of news outlets. On June 20th, Barstool Sports[6] reported on the story, and on June 21st, Vice[7] published an article about the death of El Changuito.
