How Hard Can It Be? Boys Do It refers to a trend and sound used on TikTok, primarily by women showcasing themselves in scenarios or professions thought to be typically male-dominated. The original video used in the TikToks emerged in October 2023, inspiring lip dubs and skits in late 2023 and early 2024.

Origin

On October 14th, 2023, TikTok user @mad_mitch[1] posted a TikTok explaining that she is adopting a mantra upon facing a difficult task that says, "How hard could it be? Boys do it." The TikTok gained over 160,000 likes in three months (shown below).

The mantra proved inspiring to women on the platform and began trending in January 2024, as several women used mad_mitch's sound to discuss overcoming challenges or working in male-dominated fields. For example, on January 17th, 2024, TikToker @reinaeads[2] posted a video showing her working as a female electrician, gaining over 1.1 million likes in one week (shown below, left). On January 19th, author Jodi Picoult[3] posted a video with the sound that gained over 327,000 likes in four days (shown below, right).

Others used the sound for a more humorous effect. On January 20th, TikToker estrosin used the sound to joke about wearing a strap-on, gaining over 222,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). The same day, user @slowandsimple used the sound to joke about repeating outfits, gaining over 42,000 points in three days (shown below, right).
