About
Waow (Based Based Based) refers to an exploitable drawing in which a male character is outraged about a situation and the second character, a smaller girl, says "Waow" as though she's offended but is internally thinking "Based Based Based …" The image first spread concerning the Keffals Catboy Ranch Controversy but has since been edited to fit various controversies and topics. It is particularly prominent in LGBTQ circles online.
Origin
On September 4th, 2022, Twitter / X user @LibSocAPro[1] posted a drawing in which a man angrily exclaims, "She was helping MINORS get HRT," seemingly a reference to Keffals promoting DIY Hormone Replacement Therapy on Discord during the Catboy Ranch controversy. The second character, drawn as a small girl, replies "Waow!" while thinking "Based Based Based …" in a thought bubble.
Spread
The image saw some spread over the following year, appearing on the Tumblr account dirtreally[2] on February 13th, 2023, gaining over 13,000 notes in one year, and in a 4chan[3] thread on May 21st of that year.
It also began seeing some edits around this time. For example, on February 21st, Twitter user DrTwibz[4] posted an edit related to SCP Foundation lore, though it saw little spread (shown below, left).
However, the image didn't begin seeing prevalent use as an exploitable until early 2024. An early example was posted on January 31st, 2024, by Tumblr[5] user b0tster referring to a Batman video game, gaining over 2,200 notes in two months (shown below, right).
February and March 2024 saw increased virality of the meme format, coinciding with renewed interest in the Keffals "Catboy Ranch" controversy. For example, on February 11th, 2024, Twitter user @chmsxm8[7] posted an example about Mob Psycho 100 shipping, gaining over 90 retweets and 400 likes in one month (shown below, left).
On March 17th, Twitter user @arhourigan[6] posted it about a recent Twitch stream in which the streamer Morgpie displayed Fortnite gameplay on her butt, gaining over 210 retweets and 4,400 likes in three days (shown below, right).
