I Am Black / I Am Lost Spinoffs are a series of TikTok video spinoffs of a previous trend called I Am Lost. The videos use a remixed version of "In This Shirt" by the Irrepressibles which include the new lyrics "I am black" and act out scenarios that necessitate the phrase "I am black." The trend became popular in late July 2020.

Origin

On July 25th, TikToker odawgdiggitydawg uploaded the first I Am Lost / I Am Black spinoff about being pulled over by the police (shown below). The video gained over 905,300 likes in five days.

Precursor

In June 2020, TikTokers began using videos from Toca Life: Salon to post POV roleplays of transformations set to "In This Shirt” by The Irrepressibles. On June 10th, zootedzena posted an example that gained over 566,200 likes in two weeks (shown below). TikTokers stalemat and fx.kiara.fx posted other popular iterations that received over 76,500 likes and 22,800 likes respectively in a week (shown below, right).

Spread

On July 26th, 2020, TikToker marithe_guy used odawgdiggitydawg's sound to act out a scene where he watches a slavery movie in class (shown below, left). The video garnered over 2.5 million likes in four days. That same day, TikToker sharoonbi uploaded another popular variation that accumulated over 917,900 likes in four days (shown below, center). On July 29th, TikToker cristiandennis uploaded a video of herself camping with her friends using the sound that received over 1.2 million likes in a day. StayHipp published an article on the trend.^[1]
