About
I Didn't Know You Were Chill Like That, originally known as I Didn’t Realize You Were Chilling Dog, refers to a viral video trend on TikTok that involves one person in a car, predominantly a Tesla, giving a peace sign or hang ten sign to someone annoyed at their behavior. The trend started in mid-2022 on TikTok.
Origin
On April 29th, 2022, TikToker[1] ultrachillgentleman posted a video with fellow TikToker[2] applecrumbwill, wherein, he's approached by applecrumbwill when sitting in the front seat of his Tesla while scrolling through his phone. Applecrumbwill tells him, "Yo, you can't park here, seriously," only for ultrachillgentleman to respond by smirking and gesturing the "rock-n-roll' symbol with his hands. Applecrumbwill then backs off saying, "I didn't realize you we're chilling, dog. Alright, you're good." The two then dap each other up. Over the course of a month and a half, the video received roughly 2.6 million plays and 466,300 likes (shown below).

Spread
Roughly one month later, on June 5th, 2022, TikToker[3] reesebros used ultrachillgentleman's audio to recreate the TikTok. However, in reesebros' video, he's sitting on the back of a flat-bed trailer. Over the course of five days, the video received roughly 6 million plays and 1.2 million likes (shown below).

Various TikTokers started to add onto the trend, with each iteration attempting to be more absurd than the last. On June 9th, 2022, TikToker[4] bradeazy, known for the Trade Offer meme, posted an iteration of him "chilling" on a toilet, earning roughly 862,300 plays and 146,600 likes in one day (shown below, left). On June 10th, 2022, the TikTok[5] account thepointerbrothers_ posted a version with one of them laying down on a mattress, earning roughly 28,900 plays and 5,600 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

Spread in Latin America
In July 2022, approximately one month after the trend started to spread on TikTok, Latin Americans started to post their own versions of the meme calling the trend "Eita como tá de boa" in Portuguese and "De Chill" for the Spanish community, with the hashtag #dechill accumulating 423 million views in three months. The videos followed the same aspect of someone responding to an angry person with a hang ten sign, like this post from TikToker[6] @soyprior, from September 5th, 2022, where he pretends to catch her fiancé in bed with a man, but the guy does the hang ten sign to suggest it's all good. The video (seen below) received over 2.4 million likes and 47,300 shares in two months.
