On February 15th, 2024, The Cut's[1] financial-advice columnist Charlotte Cowels published an account of getting scammed out of $50,000. The article opened with the words, "I never thought I was the kind of person to fall for a scam" (snippet shown below).

On that day, X[2] user @kattenbarge posted a link to the article, with their post gaining over 9.4 million views, 2,800 reposts and quote posts, and 3,900 likes in one day (shown below).

There's something to be said about the truth of the article. The viewer would be falling for the same thing as the article purports, only your $50,000 is actually a click for the website's ad revenue, and the scam is clickbait because the viewer is just dying to know how someone who is apparently smart enough to have $50,000 could fall for an obvious scam.
