I Never Thought I Was the Kind of Person to Fall for a Scam refers to a series of meme parodying the opening sentence of an article written by The Cut's financial-advice columnist Charlotte Cowles who was scammed out of $50,000. In memes, various characters state that they never thought they would fall for a scam before revealing scam-like situations that happened to them.
Origin
On February 15th, 2024, The Cut's[1] financial-advice columnist Charlotte Cowels published an account of getting scammed out of $50,000. The article opened with the words, "I never thought I was the kind of person to fall for a scam" (snippet shown below).
On that day, X[2] user @kattenbarge posted a link to the article, with their post gaining over 9.4 million views, 2,800 reposts and quote posts, and 3,900 likes in one day (shown below).
Spread
The article became a subject of jokes and viral discussions in the following days. On February 15th, 2024, X[3] user @McHenryJD posted a Dune meme parodying the article which received over 3,100 reposts and 39,000 likes in one day (shown below).
The post was followed by more parody memes posted on X / Twitter. For example, on February 15th, 2024, X[4] user @joshcarlosjosh made a meme referencing The Lord of the Rings that received over 1,400 reposts and 13,000 likes in one day (shown below).
