The video was uploaded to TikTok in October 2021 and went viral in lip dubs over the following months.

Origin

On October 8th, 2021, TikToker @gnocchi500, aka pop musician Beabadoobee, posted a video to TikTok^[1] where she's sitting in a restaurant tapping her chin with a drumstick. She says, "I really want some miso soup," then the camera cuts to the table with a smoke effect overtop. Beabadoobee waves the drumstick in front of the table and miso soup appears and she says, "oh my god, miso soup" (shown below). The video gained over 12.3 million views in two months.

Spread

The original sound became popularized over the course of November 2021 on TikTok,^[4][5] inspiring over 319,000 videos on the platform by early December. The videos see TikTokers lip dub to "I really want some miso soup" while presenting something they desire through on-screen-text, then cut to the thing they want (most popular examples shown below, left and right).

The audio also spread to YouTube. On November 14th, 2021, YouTuber^[6] nobody sausage posted an animation using the audio, gaining over 4.8 million views in two weeks (shown below).

On November 23rd, 2021, Dexerto^[2] published a story about the trend mentioning that Beabadoobee features in the song "Death Bed (Coffee for Your Head)" by Powfu, which went viral on TikTok previously. On November 30th, We Got This Covered^[3] published a piece on the sound. On the same day, TikToker @kallmekris posted a video using the sound, gaining over 7.6 million views in three days (shown below).
