I'll Vote For Whatever Returns Us To This refers to a tweet by a Twitter user impersonating Virginia governor-elect Glenn Youngkin that said, "I'll vote for whatever returns us to this," along with a painting of a white family singing in a church. The tweet, posted in early November 2021, inspired a series of parodies in which people paired the text with humorous images as reactions to the catchphrase in memes.
Origin
On November 7th, 2021, Twitter user @populist_mack,[1] whose display name was changed to "GOV. YOUNGKIN" and profile picture changed to a picture of Youngkin, tweeted, "I'll vote for whatever returns us to this," along with an image of a white family singing in a church (shown below). The tweet has since been deleted.
Spread
The tweet quickly inspired parodies in the replies to the post. For example, user @pugdady[2] tweeted a parody using Saturn Devouring His Son on November 9th, 2021, gaining over 160 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). User @Dorpenstein[3] posted a famous painting of dogs playing poker that same day, gaining over 1,000 likes in the same time period (shown below, right).
Other notable examples include a post by @HeheWaitWhut[4] on November 9th that showed an image from Stepbrothers, gaining over 70 retweets and 2,000 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left), and a post from @jesusdrogas[5] that showed an old picture of DJ Khaled that gained over 190 retweets and 1,000 likes in the same time period (shown below, right).
