About

The IMAX The Mummy Trailer refers to an incomplete version of the official preview clip for the 2017 action-adventure horror film The Mummy starring Tom Cruise that was accidentally uploaded to the IMAX's official YouTube channel in mid-December 2016. Upon its initial release on YouTube, the trailer quickly became a popular subject of online parodies and mockeries for its comedic value in the same vein as music videos without music remixes.

Origin

On December 13th, 2016, the IMAX YouTube channel uploaded a promotional trailer for the 2017 American action-adventure horror film The Mummy, not to be confused with the 1998 film with the same name, which featured a heavily spotty and poorly-edited audio track.

A week later, the trailer was eventually taken down from YouTube and replaced with the proper version by IMAX following its discovery of the missing audio track, though several duplicate versions of the initial upload quickly followed suit on Tumblr[1] and Twitter[2] (shown below), including YouTube personality Nick Robinson who brought further exposure to the botched trailer in a tweet posted on December 20th. His tweet has since been “withheld in response to a report from the copyright holder.”

Spread

After Nick Robinson's tweet, the trailer began spreading through Twitter as users ironically praised the goofy effects created by the poor audio. Many jokes revolved around Tom Cruise's isolated scream and the complete lack of audio that occurs when a flock of birds attacks a plane. Other users made edits to the trailer to include unfitting soundtracks or they edited other film clips to include audio from the IMAX Mummy trailer. The jokes and the edits were covered in a Twitter Moment[3] on the 21st, while Daily Dot,[4] Polygon,[5] The Verge,[6] Cheezburger,[7] and more covered the spread of the jokes.
