About

Italians Singing During Coronavirus Lockdown refers to parodies of a video in which Italians, under quarantine during the Coronavirus sing together out their windows over an empty street. The video inspired some to create parodies that feature the Italians singing popular and humorous songs.

Origin

On March 12th, 2020, Twitter user @valamercurii[1] posted a video in which people from Siena, Italy were singing an Italian popular song outside their windows during the Coronavirus lockdown. The video gained over 5.3 million views on Twitter (shown below). It was also covered by CNN.[2]

Spread

The video inspired parodies where people dubbed crowds singing other songs over similar footage. For example, Twitter user @gyllenpresley posted an edited video which made a crowd look like it was singing "Lose Yourself" by Eminem (shown below, top), gaining over 5,800 retweets and 22,000 likes. User @explicitxshady made a similar video, using "Not Afraid" by Eminem, gaining over 4,200 retweets and 14,000 likes (shown below, bottom).

The quality of the fakes led some celebrities to be fooled into thinking they were genuine. For example, Katy Perry was fooled by a video which made it appear as though a neighborhood was singing her song "Roar," tweeting, "You cannot break the human spirit. We are one in this. ♥️" (shown below, top). Madonna fell for the same prank as well (shown below, bottom). Cheryl, Jessie J, and Shawn Mendes also fell for similar pranks.[3]

Twitter user and journalist Taylor Lorenz[4] posted about how "celebs are so stupid" in response to the pranks (shown below).

Taylor Lorenz @TaylorLorenz Oh my god celebs are so stupid. This is a meme. They aren't singing your song KATY PERRY @katyperry · Mar 14 You cannot break the human spirit. We are one in this. V twitter.com/suddenlyistan. 4:47 PM · Mar 15, 2020 · Twitter for iPhone
