"It's Because of the Meth, Isn't It?" is a rehetorical questions referenceing a post submitted to the /r/AskReddit subreddit in early November 2017. The phrase has since been used as a shitpost reply to various threads, comments and questions on Reddit.

Origin

On November 1st, 2017, Redditor^[1] isterbibble described a first date experience with a methamphetamine user in the /r/ASkReddit thread "What is the creepiest NSFW thing you have experienced?" They wrote:

"While on an unremarkable first date, the guy asked if I minded if he smoked and I said no. We were walking in a quiet park after dinner. He sits down on a bench and busts out meth, asking me if I want some. After realizing he intend to smoke meth, not cigarettes or weed, I said it was time for me to go home. He seemed surprised and then said, “it’s because of the meth, isn’t it?"

The phrase was quickly used on various subreddits. That day, Redditor^[2] XRT28 used it in response to the post in /r/Jokes "Why does Kevin Spacey never get 1st place in races?"

That day, Redditor^[4] critical2210 posted a screenshot of two Redditors discussing the popularity of the phrase was becoming. The post ends with a Redditor replying, "I feel like we're going to see an explosion of 'it's because of the meth isn't it' responses over reddit, then a post to /r/OutOfTheLoop 'why are people asking about meth everywhere.'" This post comes from Redditor^[6] felisrufus, who received more than 3,800 points in less than 24 hours for their prediction.

After the post gained significant upvotes on Reddit,^[3] isterbibble posted a meme based on the moment featuring Super Hans from the British television series Peep Show with the phrase in Impact Font overlaid on the picture. Within 12 hours, the post (show below, right) received more than 15,000 views.

The following day, Redditor^[5] tazfriend posted the question "What's the deal with 'It's because of the meth isn't it?'" on the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit. Within six hours, the post (shown below) received more than 1,200 points (88% upvoted) and 50 comments.
