Jackass Couch Explosion refers to a clip of a couch with stuntman Preston Lacy sitting on it, then exploding from the ending scene of the 2010 reality comedy film Jackass 3D. In February 2022, the scene gained virality as source material for memes, mainly video and GIF captions.

Origin

On October 15th, 2010, the reality comedy film Jackass 3D premiered.^[1] In the final scene of the film, Johnny Knoxville sets off a series of explosions in the room with the cast in it. One shot captures an explosion going off under the couch that stuntman Preston Lacy is sitting on, with the couch being thrown into the air (shown below).

On February 9th, 2022, iFunny^[2] user ELVIS_PUSSLEY posted a post-ironic video caption meme based on the clip, set to "Für Elise" by Ludwig van Beethoven and captioned, "'Sir this a 10 item or less checkout' The explosive vest I strapped to my son." The post was featured on the app and received over 58,700 smiles in one month (shown below).

Spread

In the following days, the clip gained virality on iFunny. For example, on February 9th, 2022, iFunny^[3][4][5] users Bulletin, pp_bmac and WhenHeNut posted video caption memes that gained over 1,800 smiles, 490 smiles and 700 smiles, respectively (shown below).

On February 11th, 2022, meme Twitter^[6][7] accounts @OutOfContextEvr and @TheFunny_Mp4 each reposted a version of the meme, with the posts gaining over 37,100 views and 489,500 likes in one month, which promoted further spread of the format on Twitter (post by @OutOfContextEvr shown below).

In the following month, more viral versions of the meme were posted on iFunny, Twitter, Reddit and other platforms, with the clip being set to "Gangnam Style," brap remix of "This Is Sparta" and other songs.
