Killing Flies With Syringes refers to a trend in which TikTokers film themselves killing flies by squishing them in syringes. The trend went viral in late July 2020 after numerous people noticed several videos of flies being killed on their "For You Page" and began creating memes surrounding the phenomenon.

Origin

On July 25th, 2020, TikToker djshbdbdb uploaded the earliest known fly killing video which garnered over 12,300 likes in 10 days (shown below).

On July 29th, 2020, TikToker dominodominator uploaded the fly syringe video that launched the trends viral success and used the Mi Pan audio (shown below, left). The video gained over 226,800 likes in a week. That same day, TikTok great_content6969 uploaded another example using the hashtags #NatureVibes and #cute (shown below, center). The video received over 529,900 likes in a week. TikToker nagisatarui uploaded a Video Killed the Radio Star meme regarding the trend and accumulated over 286,600 likes in a week (shown below, right). StayHipp[1] published an article on the trend.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who finds this a bit disturbing.

Yes, I know, they're just flies, most insects don't even have a centralized nervous system, so they probably don't feel it, but at least fly swatters are quick and practical.

I know I'm invoking the "Slippy Slope Fallacy" here, but I'm just a tiny bit concerned they might move on to something… bigger. And it's only a fallacy if it doesn't eventually come true.
